The Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a gynecological test that involves obtaining cells from the epithelium lining the cervix and vagina for examination under a microscope. This test allows for the early detection of cervical cancer in women.

It is a quick gynecological study and the sample is taken at the clinic itself. The woman is placed in a gynecological position and the doctor performs a scraping with the help of a small spatula. Generally, the Pap smear is recommended when the patient has stopped menstruating.

Most specialists recommend that all women should have a Pap smear regularly from the age of 20 onwards.
