Those patients who choose to genetically test their embryos run the risk of having to cancel the cycle because none of their embryos are healthy. In addition, PGD requires manipulation of the embryo, and some embryos cannot withstand PGD.
Another drawback of PGD is that only one cell of the embryo is analysed. However, mosaic embryos contain both healthy and altered cells. Therefore, it is possible that a non-viable healthy mosaic embryo may be transferred or the other way around.
