Definition of retinitis pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a condition that causes blindness, as it involves the degeneration of the photoreceptors in the retina (cones and rods). It is a disease with several inheritance patterns, as it can be autosomal recessive or dominant, as well as X-linked. Additionally, there have been cases in which retinitis pigmentosa occurs spontaneously, without any family history.

Another characteristic aspect of retinitis pigmentosa is that vision loss does not occur equally in all affected individuals; it is unique to each person.
