In vitro gametogenesis is an experimental technique currently being worked on, which could represent a major breakthrough in the field of assisted reproduction for patients who cannot produce gametes or for same-sex couples to have biological children.
This technique involves obtaining gametes (eggs or sperm) from somatic cells such as those of the skin or blood.
