Urinary tract infections are highly prevalent in women and many women have several urinary tract infections in their lifetime. The causative agent of UTIs is usually E. coli, a common microorganism in the digestive tract and in the area between the anus and vagina. No studies have clearly proven that this bacterium is transmitted between sexual partners and may be the source of sexual colonisation.
Some of the risk factors for UTIs are menopause, shorter urethra than men, use of condoms, depressed immune system, etc.
