What is uterine septum?

By (embryologist).
Last Update: 10/12/2019

A uterine septum is a septum inside the uterine cavity that can interfere with the implantation process and even cause abortions.

It is caused by a failure in the reabsorption of the central septum that separated the Müller ducts during embryonic development, so it is a congenital anomaly. Specifically, the uterine septum is the most frequent uterine malformation, with a prevalence of 55%.

The septum uterus can be corrected by hysteroscopic surgery with very beneficial results, increasing the rate of pregnancies and decreasing the rate of abortions.
