Of the total weight that a woman gains during pregnancy, about two-thirds is water. Keep in mind that the mother's blood volume increases, that water is needed to produce amniotic fluid, and that the fetus itself and the placenta have a high water content.
For all these reasons, it is important for women to stay properly hydrated during pregnancy, which will require an increased water intake.
