During lactation, it is recommended that an additional 700 ml of water be added to the recommended 2 liters per day. The reason is that milk contains more than 85% water, so milk production means a large loss of water for the woman.
However, if a woman is breastfeeding more than one baby, she will produce more milk. This means that the water loss will be greater and, therefore, she will have to increase her water intake more. Similarly, living in a warm climate or being physically active also increases water loss.
However, it is common for a woman to feel thirsty when breastfeeding her baby. This favors water intake to compensate for the loss, thus preventing maternal dehydration.
