The corpus albicans, also called white ovarian body, refers to the scar that forms when the corpus luteum degenerates.
Degeneration of the corpus luteum occurs after the release of the ovum in the ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle. If the released egg is not fertilized and there is no implantation, the corpus luteum stops producing progesterone. It is at this time that the corpus Albicans is formed.
