Nuchal translucency of the fetus by ultrasonography

In addition to the maternal blood test for PAPP-A protein and beta-hCG, an ultrasound is necessary in the 12th week of pregnancy in order to complete the triple screening test on the fetus.

In this ultrasound, the fetal nuchal fold, a collection of fluid under the skin at the back of the fetal neck, is measured. All healthy babies have a nuchal translucency of less than 3 mm. However, if this measurement is greater, it could be indicative of a chromosomal disorder in the fetus, such as Down syndrome.
