In a blastocyst biopsy for PGD, at least 4-5 cells are extracted from the trophoectoderm, which is the part of the embryo that will give rise to extra-embryonic structures such as the placenta.
To prevent the blastocyst from being damaged during the biopsy, the inner cell mass is placed on the side opposite the extraction to ensure that it remains intact.
