On occasion, in assisted reproduction treatments, the chromosomal load of the embryo is evaluated, since a chromosomally healthy (euploid) embryo has a better chance of success.
The traditional method for performing this genetic analysis consists of an embryo biopsy, that is, extracting a small number of cells from the embryo's trophectoderm.
However, there is also non-invasive preimplantation genetic testing (niPGT), which analyzes the cell-free DNA found in the culture medium where the embryo has developed in vitro.
