Possible causes of amniotic fluid leakage

Sometimes, the exact reason for amniotic fluid leakage weeks before delivery is unknown. However, in other cases, the most common causes associated with amniotic fluid leakage during pregnancy are infections, undergoing an amniocentesis, or gestational complications such as placental abruption.

In addition, having experienced amniotic fluid leakage previously, having preterm contractions, or uterine overdistension can also lead to this alteration in the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.
