What is an antral follicle?

An antral follicle is a small fluid-filled sac found inside the ovaries. Each of these follicles surrounds an immature egg. The antral follicle count is performed through transvaginal ultrasound and allows the assessment of the woman's ovarian reserve.

When a patient undergoes in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, the antral follicle count provides information about the approximate number that will be obtained after ovarian stimulation.
