Autoimmune diseases are caused by failures in the immune system, which, instead of attacking foreign cells, mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy cells and tissues. An example of an autoimmune disease is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) whose most prominent clinical manifestation is the appearance of butterfly-shaped spots on the skin and face.
In addition, other symptoms associated with SLE include fatigue, fever and arthritis.
