A common pregnancy myth is that if a woman has a lot of heartburn, it is because the baby will be born with a lot of hair. However, this is a popular belief that is not supported by scientific evidence.
Heartburn or reflux is caused by the contents of the stomach rising up into the oesophagus, causing discomfort. This situation is favoured by the hormonal changes of pregnancy and by the enlargement of the uterus, which causes the stomach to change its position.
