In order to determine cholesterol levels, a blood test is performed. Cholesterol is produced in the liver, but the cholesterol we take in through our diet is also important, since both contribute to the total cholesterol levels in the blood.
As for normal values, total cholesterol should not be higher than 200 mg/dl. LDL (known as bad cholesterol) should be below 100 mg/dl and, finally, HDL or good cholesterol should be above 35 or 40 mg/dl in men and women, respectively.
