What is cystitis?

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder caused by a bacterial infection. However, bacterial infection is not the only cause of cystitis.

Radiation therapy, spermicidal gels, or long-term use of a catheter can also cause bladder inflammation. Other times, the causative agent of cystitis is a fungus or a virus, although it is less common.

Symptoms of cystitis include the following:

• Pain and burning when urinating.
• Increased urge to urinate.
• Little amount of urine.
• Permanent sensation of urination.

The treatment of cystitis is usually the administration of antibiotics, although it will depend on the type of infection and its recurrence.
