An endometrioma, also known as chocolate cyst, is a special type of cyst that can appear in the ovaries of up to 50% of women with endometriosis. The name chocolate cyst is due to its contents, as it presents a dark, thick substance inside.

The diagnosis of endometriomas is made by abdominal ultrasound and pathological studies of the endometrial tissue. Once the cyst has been diagnosed and classified, the best treatment will depend on the size of the endometrioma and the symptoms it generates in the woman. Sometimes it is necessary to resort to surgery to remove the endometrioma.
