Are Y chromosome microdeletions related to oligozoospermia?

By Marta Barranquero Gómez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 06/20/2024

Yes. Losses of small fragments of genetic material in the AZF region of the Y chromosome cause alterations in the process of sperm formation (spermatogenesis). As a consequence, it is possible that men with microdeletions of the Y chromosome have a lower concentration of sperm in the ejaculate, especially if the microdeletions affect the AZFc region.
