Can endometriosis cause cancer?

By Marta Barranquero Gómez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 12/12/2025

Unlike cancer, endometriosis involves the growth of benign cells.

It is also not considered a precursor to ovarian or endometrial cancer, as the mutations that cause these cancers appear to be different from those associated with endometriosis.

Studies have not found an increased incidence of these cancers in women with endometriosis, so there is no scientific evidence to claim that endometriosis can be the cause.
