How long does premenopause last?

By Marta Barranquero Gómez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 07/02/2026

The transition to menopause can vary from woman to woman. In some cases, perimenopause begins before age 40, and women may experience premenopausal symptoms for up to about 10 years.

In other cases, a woman may only experience premenopausal symptoms a few months before her last menstrual period.

However, perimenopause typically lasts 2 or 3 years in women.
