In which cases can AI be performed in a natural cycle, without ovarian stimulation?

By Elena Santiago Romero M.D. (gynecologist).
Last Update: 07/23/2024

It is recommended to perform an AI in a natural cycle as long as the following criteria are met:

  • Women under 35 years of age with regular cycles and no history of infertility, i.e. women without a partner or homosexual women undergoing AI treatment with donor sperm.
  • Women over 35 years of age who do have a male partner, but no proven fertility (cases of males with azoospermia, no possibility of coitus or ejaculation during intercourse, etc.).

During the menstrual cycle, ultrasound scans will be performed to monitor follicular growth spontaneously and the time of ovulation will be controlled, that is, ovulation is provoked at the right time to perform the insemination about 36 hours later.
