Is it already possible to hear the fetal heartbeat at week 6?

By Blanca Paraíso M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc. (gynecologist on Love Fertility Clinic).

Indeed, as early as week 6 of pregnancy, the fetal heartbeat can be heard.

The heart and the main blood vessels begin to develop about 16 days after fertilization (at about 4 weeks of pregnancy), and the heart starts pumping fluid through the blood vessels around day 20 post-fertilization.

Thus, at around 6 weeks, it is already possible to see this heartbeat by ultrasound and even hear it using Doppler technology. The rhythm of the heartbeat at 6 weeks is usually 120 beats per minute, increasing in the following weeks.
