Is it necessary to have a period of abstinence to undergo a seminogram-REM?

By Marta Barranquero Gómez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 05/17/2022

Yes, of course it is necessary to have a period of abstinence for a REM semen analysis.

The motile sperm count (REM) is a type of analysis that allows the study of semen quality once the sperm capacitation process has passed. It is the combination of a basic semen analysis (volume, concentration, viscosity, etc.) with the evaluation of semen quality after capacitation.
