By Marta Barranquero Gómez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 04/02/2026

Mainly, testosterone plays two roles in the male body:

  • Androgenic effect: contributes to the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics (appearance of a beard, voice deepening, etc.)
  • Anabolic effect: promotes an increase in bone mass and strength in men. Furthermore, this anabolic effect of testosterone in men causes the stimulation of bone growth and maturation.
