When the amount of amniotic fluid is below normal, it is known as oligohydramnios.
Among the possible causes of oligohydramnios or low amniotic fluid during pregnancy are the following:
- Rupture of membranes.
- Placental abruption.
- High blood pressure.
- Fetal malformations.
- Post-term pregnancy.

Additionally, some maternal diseases such as diabetes or lupus can also cause low levels of amniotic fluid during pregnancy.
