What is the reason for the low amount of amniotic fluid?

When the amount of amniotic fluid is below normal, it is known as oligohydramnios.

Among the possible causes of oligohydramnios or low amniotic fluid during pregnancy are the following:

  • Rupture of membranes.
  • Placental abruption.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Fetal malformations.
  • Post-term pregnancy.

Additionally, some maternal diseases such as diabetes or lupus can also cause low levels of amniotic fluid during pregnancy.
