Ultrasound scans are necessary in order to check that foetal development is proceeding properly. The tests performed at 12, 20 and 32 weeks are the most important for prenatal diagnosis. Therefore, a foetal ultrasound is performed in each trimester of pregnancy. However, if the pregnancy is at risk, more ultrasound tests may be performed to have a thorough control of the situation.
In the case of the first trimester fetal ultrasound, it is usually done at 6-13 weeks of gestation. At this time, the ultrasound will show whether it is a singleton or twin pregnancy depending on the number of embryo sacs observed. In addition, the first trimester ultrasound will be used to evaluate the heartbeat and estimate the gestation time.
