Throughout the menstrual cycle, not only do changes occur at the ovarian level, but the uterine endometrium also undergoes changes that prepare it in each menstrual cycle for a possible pregnancy.
During the beginning of the ovarian follicular phase, the uterine endometrium is shed and expelled during menstruation. However, as estrogen levels increase, the endometrium proliferates and regenerates from its basal layer. This phase is therefore known as the proliferative phase.
