The follicular phase of the menstrual cycle is the first phase of the cycle. Thus, the follicular phase begins with the onset of menstruation (which lasts about 3-6 days) and lasts until the time of ovulation (the expulsion of an egg from the ovary).
Thus, the next phase of the menstrual cycle is ovulation, which is followed by the luteal phase. The luteal phase ends when menstruation ends (if the woman has not become pregnant), which is the beginning of a new menstrual cycle.
