Can you get pregnant right after stopping the pill?

I have been using the birth control pills for the last 3 years and it has really helped a lot. Now i want to conceive. What should i do? Should i stop the usage immediately? I have consulted my doctor and that is what they recommend. However i just wanted to ensure that there will not be any side affects of the constant use of these pills. Shall i try immediately or should i wait to get pregnant? Will this be safe? Shall we use contraceptives. I have all these questions in my mind. Let me know if you have experienced any of this? Your suggestions will surely help me find a solution to all my problems.
