Hi, we are about to start an IVF cycle using donor sperm next month. We need donor sperm because my partner is a transgendered woman… But we don’t actually know how many embryos should we transfer or how much will it cost in this case. I’m 41 and I know my ovarian reserve is not as when I was 20 anymore… Any help would be very much appreciated 🙂11/25/2015 at 9:21 am
If you are in the US, there is no limit as to how many embryos should be transferred. The precise amount is agreed by consensus between physicians, embryologists and, of course, the patient, accordging to her medical history, charactersitcis and menstrual cycle development. Anyow, the final decision is always in the hands of the couple or woman who is undergoing the embryo transfer (ET).
Out of the factors taken into account, the woman’s age is a crucial one, since ovarian reserve diminishes from age 35 onwards, which rises the chances for both the eggs and the embryos to carry any genetic abnormality. Another thing born in mind is embryo grading: the more quality, the greater chances for implantation to be successful.
If more than a single embryo is transferred, chances of getting pregnant increase, but also those of multiple births. For all these motives, balancing smartly all the factors mentioned above is strongly advisable, always aiming at reaching some kind of stability. The ideal thing would be carrying a pregnancy to term, avoiding as far as possible getting a twin pregnancy.
