Known sperm donation in the UK

    Hi there,

Is it possible to do a known sperm donation in the UK? I know this is possible in the USA, but not sure if I’ll be able here. My sister-in-law and brother need donor sperm because his sample has been diagnosed as azoospermic, so they’ve asked me to donate my semen to them and this way the baby will have his genetic material.

Please, kindly if you could clarify this for us, it’ll be highly appreciated.

  2. Dear Marcus M.,

In case you are donating your sperm to a friend or family member, the first thing you have to do is discussing feelings and practicalities. For instance, what role you want to play in the child’s life, if any.

In this sense, it may be a good idea to get legal advice and counseling, and drawing up a donor co-parenting agreement. Although this document is not legally binding, it may turn out to be a good way to set out the intentions of each one of the parties involved at the time of conception.

Once this is done, you can choose between donating at a UK clinic, in which case the person you are donating your sample to contacts the clinic and tells the staff about the donation process. Another option is to make the donation through a private arrangement, that is, to provide the sample directly to her via artificial insemination (AI). The main disadvantage of this option is that the law on who will be the child’s legal father is not straightforward. For this reason, you are strongly advised to seek legal advice.

I hope I have been able to help,

    Best regards
