What is general anesthesia?

General anesthesia is a form of anesthesia that consists of a combination of medications that put the patient in a state similar to deep sleep.

Therefore, the patient loses consciousness completely and thus does not feel pain during surgery, as his brain does not respond to pain signals or reflexes.

The doctor administers general anesthesia through an intravenous line, i.e. by pricking the medication into a vein. Another option for anesthetizing a patient is to inhale gases or vapors through a breathing mask.
