Bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus are frequent in the normal vaginal flora. These bacteria have a protective effect against infection by other pathogenic microorganisms, as they produce lactic acid. This compound reduces the pH of the vagina, creating a hostile environment that prevents the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
