What is a hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, either in whole or in part. The uterus is the essential organ for pregnancy, since it is where the embryo is implanted for its development. Therefore, hysterectomy supposes the loss of female fertility and prevents carrying a pregnancy to term.

It is an invasive and irreversible surgery that is carried out by laparotomy or laparoscopy.

In addition to partial and total hysterectomy, there is radical hysterectomy where the uterus is removed but also the cervix and the upper part of the vagina.
