Implanon is a subdermal implant that is inserted under the skin and releases low doses of etonogestrel into the blood. Its contraceptive effect lasts for 3 years, after which it is recommended to remove it to be replaced by a new one or by another contraceptive method.
It is a plastic rod 4 cm long and 2 mm thick. In addition to the active ingredient, Implanon contains barium sulfate (and other components) that allow it to be visualized by X-ray.
