A woman who is isoimmunised for the Rh factor, i.e. has antibodies to the Rh factor, can have certain serious complications if she becomes pregnant with an Rh-positive foetus.
Isoimmunisation of the Rh-negative woman may have occurred in a previous pregnancy with an Rh-positive baby or, for example, after an Rh-positive blood transfusion (now rare).
The antibodies generated after isoimmunisation can cross the placenta and attack the baby's Rh-positive red blood cells, which can lead to a serious condition called perinatal haemolytic disease.
