The copper IUD is a contraceptive method whose action is not based on the release of hormones, but on creating an inflammatory reaction in the uterus causing damage to sperm and eggs. Its effectiveness is 98-99%, so the possibility of pregnancy is virtually nil.
It is a T-shaped plastic structure surrounded at the top by copper. Occasionally, this type of intrauterine device has a silver or gold center to prevent the breakage of the copper wire.
