When a woman takes a pregnancy test after an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, two situations can occur:
- Positive pregnancy test. The IVF treatment has been successful and the woman should confirm the evolution of the pregnancy by performing the first ultrasound at 6-7 weeks of gestation.
- Negative pregnancy test. The IVF treatment has not achieved pregnancy. In the event that there are vitrified embryos, a subsequent transfer of these embryos can be performed, while if this is not the case, it will be necessary to repeat a complete new cycle.
In any case, it should be noted that the pregnancy test should not be performed earlier than 12-15 days after the embryo transfer, otherwise the test may give an erroneous result.
