Liquefaction is an important macroscopic semen parameter in the study of semen. Semen should liquefy, i.e. become more liquid about 15-20 minutes after ejaculation. Therefore, liquefaction is the process by which semen becomes less compact. This process aids the movement of sperm through the female reproductive tract until it reaches the fallopian tubes.
When the semen sample remains dense more than 1 hour after collection, liquefaction is said to be incomplete. In these cases, a mechanical liquefaction could be chosen. Otherwise, it could cause alterations in sperm motility.
