In the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, the endometrium is in the secretory phase. This means that, due to the progesterone produced by the corpus luteum, the endometrium begins to secrete substances in preparation for possible embryo implantation.
If the woman does not become pregnant, the endometrium is shed at the time of menstruation, which is the beginning of the next menstrual cycle.
However, if pregnancy occurs, menstruation is not triggered and menstrual cycles cease during pregnancy.
