Postpartum mastitis in mothers is often closely linked to poor latch during breastfeeding, which can lead to cracked nipples. When experiencing pain, the mother may decide to stop nursing from that breast, thereby increasing the risk of inflammation in the mammary glands.

- Age
- History of mastitis
- Nutrition
- Stress and fatigue
- Working outside the home
