Amniocentesis is an invasive technique and is therefore only recommended when the fetus is at high risk of a chromosomopathy:
- Advanced maternal age
- Altered triple screening
- History of abortions or fetal malformations
With these studies, in addition to monitoring and medical advice during pregnancy, the risk of perinatal mental retardation has been reduced from 25 to 5% in recent years.
