Once the baby is born, the onset of the first menstrual cycle may take 8 to 10 weeks if the mother chooses to bottle-feed and up to 6 months (or even longer) if she chooses to breast-feed.
In any case, once the first menstrual period appears, it is common for it to be abundant and irregular.
