Menstrual migraines are usually caused by an abrupt drop in estrogen levels prior to ovulation and menstruation. However, the drop in estrogen levels in women is not the only trigger for migraines.
Estrogens have links with various neurotransmitters, such as catecholamines, serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, among others, which may also play a significant role in the development of menstrual migraine.
