Before determining a treatment to address dyspareunia and ensure that sexual intercourse is pain-free, it is important to identify the underlying cause.
Sometimes, using creams or lubricants is all that is needed to prevent a woman from experiencing pain during intercourse. Other times, if dyspareunia is caused by an infection, antibiotic treatment is necessary. Once the infection is resolved, the woman will be able to enjoy sexual intercourse as the pain will subside.
Additionally, there are hormonal treatments or estrogen receptor modulators that are often recommended for women in the postmenopausal stage.
