The amount of iodine in the mother's body during the first months of pregnancy must be controlled and adequate. Otherwise, if there is an iodine deficit, it is possible that alterations may occur in the formation and maturation of the baby's central nervous system.
An iodine deficiency during gestation may be the cause of:
- Mental retardation.
- Spontaneous abortion.
- Fetal death.
