The increase in estrogen levels as ovulation approaches triggers an increase in the concentration of electrolytes in the saliva. For this reason, when a drop of saliva from the periovulatory period crystallizes, a very characteristic fern-leaf pattern will appear.
The saliva ovulation test, being like a small microscope, allows the woman to observe these changes in saliva crystallization.
