To conduct a PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) procedure, the specialist performs a biopsy to the embryo and then removes one or two cells, depending on the stage of embryo development.
The cells removed from the embryo are examined to detect which embryos are healthy (free to the disease or diseases) and which are not, as well as those with a HLA system that is compatible with that of the sick child.
Only healthy embryos with a HLA system that is compatible with that of the sick child will be transferred to the intended mother.
